Suppose v be the velocity of the body after falling through half the distance. Then
s=402=20m,u=0andg=10m/s2
v2=u2+2gh=02+2×10×20
v=20m/s.
When the acceleration due to gravity ceases to act, the body travels with the uniform velocity of 20m/s. So it hits the ground with velocity 20m/s.
